graffiti is art

Banksy - a pseudo anonymous graffiti artist has recently struck London big time. I love his work and how he redefines graffiti to go beyond the typical tagging and nonsense when 14 year old decide that graffiti is how they will assert their independence and make their mark. Banksy however is clearly older, uses stencils and creates fantastic work with often a pretty blatant message. (sometimes you agree, sometimes you don't.. but isn't that what art is for?) However, his work is worth a mint now and he doesn't get anything from it. Recently he just tagged a local mini market of a relatively poor but surviving Indian family. If they sell it and replace the wall that he tagged, it's probably be a profit of upward £300,000. I think that says something about him too.

Banksy may be best known as the man who changed 500 Paris Hilton CD covers without anyone knowing to covers that said 'why am i famous', 'what am i for' and one cover that Paris with homeless people saying 90 per cent of success is just showing up. Don't you just love him a little? But maybe he gave her too much free publicity....
