In 2008 Liverpool was named the European Capital of Culture. I know, I know it was a bit of a shock to my system too.
However, the amount that Liverpool has decided to create cool architecture (ie. turning the place over) and sculptures that have functionality too. A new radar tower is being built at the end of the river with an artsy take, they have a massive music revival starting in June and a pretty prominent Klimt exhibit at Tate Liverpool. I always knew that I needed to visit more of England... but I was more keen on Bath. However, Liverpool is apparently making a comeback of cool culture that I need to see!
