Bern is the capital of Switzerland because Zurich and Geneva couldn't agree so they picked the middle city. It's not the shocking that's how most capital cities are decided. However, Bern is a UNESCO world heritage site in its own right and was founded in 1141 (redone in 1400 something due to a fire). The place is just stunning and very apropo of what I thought a swiss town/city would look like.
Bern is bear in german apparently and the reason for the name of the city was the founder hunted a bear in that spot and decide to create a city too. Unfortunately this means that Bern has a very strange pit where they keep two brown bears (that are not Swiss) and due to moral complaints from tourists and locals alike, are creating an actual habitat for them. They definitely looked happier than bears in a zoo, but I can't wait for them to have their new digs!
